One Year Blogiversary!

The time has come! Exactly 1 year ago today I started Baking Priority. It started off as a dream born from completing my PhD, but I’m so happy I stuck with it. My first photography post was on Yosemite National Park on www.bakingpriority.wordpress.com, just to test the waters. The blog started off just as a place for me to organize my thoughts, but it quickly turned into something I wanted to share. I thought I was pretty decent as a beginner photographer at the time. Looking back and seeing my first photos, overusing dodge/burn layers, only shooting in JPEG format, not using a tripod – these all make me chuckle now. I’ve learned a lot about photography from listening to podcasts and following bloggers and have grown so much since then.

My first baking post was on German Chocolate Red Velvet Cake, and I thought I was a decent baker. That cake turned out pretty well (although not as red as I’d like), but the ingredients I used never sat well with me and I changed my vision to reflect the healthier lifestyle I chose to live. That’s why my recipe posts are few and far between – I’m developing recipes using better ingredients.

Anyway, thank you all for following along! All the likes and subscriptions really mean a lot to me. I’ve grown both as a photographer and a baker and have made many new friends through blogging. Here’s to another great year!

I’ll leave you with two images. The first is a sunset behind our house that was too pretty not to capture. I took this after one of the fires we had last year, and you can still see the smoke. The second photograph is how I imagine our son right now, waiting to come into the world.

  1. Hi Matthew. Congratulations on getting to the one-year mark with your journal! It’s a nice milestone and it’s a meaningful one especially since you’ve built such an enjoyable archive. First time visitor, here…….I enjoyed looking through some of the fine images on your site and not least of all, reading some of your thoughts and impressions about the craft. And of course I kept having hunger pangs as I perused your site, haha! Congratulations to you on the new member of your family, too!

    1. Thanks so much for the kind words! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the site and content so far. Hunger pangs are what motivates me to test out recipes (I’ve made a ton of failed attempts that were delicious!), so I completely understand. Thanks also for the congrats on Booker – he is a very cute handful 😛
