This year we weren’t able to travel far for the super bloom because of COVID-19 and the kids. So we stuck to one of our favorite local places: Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. There was not a lot of people on the trail, especially going up to Vista Point since it’s a grueling hike with steep inclines and little shade.
Since I was carrying Bode in a Moby wrap, I didn’t want to carry my camera – the added weight would have made the hike so much more difficult. So I shot all of this year’s super bloom with my Samsung Galaxy S21. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out!
On the way up, the trail treated us with beautiful views of not only the blooming mustard plants, but of Red Rock Canyon (upper left of this first photo), our favorite place to hike in Whiting Ranch. I also love the contrasting colors of yellow in the foreground and green in the background.
This next shot was closer to the summit. This spot has a peekaboo view of the City of Lake Forest followed by Irvine way in the distance. The fields of yellow were endless!
Mustard plants aren’t the only wildflower that blooms at Whiting Ranch. I’m not an expert at plant identification, but here’s a closeup of what I think is a thistle:
And maybe a toadflax:
On the way out, we were treated to a couple of deer! They were galloping and following each other. It was so cute!
